Reflecting, Continued

Continuing on from my previous post...

Make. What was the last thing you made? What materials did you use? Is there something you want to make, but you need to clear some time for it? {Author: Gretchen Rubin}

The last thing I actually made were bats. Yup, Halloween bats. I downloaded a template, bought some nice black scrapbook paper (12x12 in case you were wondering) and went to town cutting out bats of various sizes! It was a nice break from studying at the time.

Super easy! To attach them I just used Scotch tape. I think I had a few more when I was finished, but you get the idea.

I’ve had this old door desk project on my to-do list for a looong time now, but haven’t gotten to it. It will go in my green room and will be quite large and lovely I think! I’ve seen them elsewhere but this version really caught my eye {I love her whole office actually and aren't those dogs adorable?}. I have the old door out in my garage, awaiting some cleaning and sanding, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. And since my garage is basically a glorified shed, it’s a bit of a pain at the moment to run extension cords out there for the sander…not to mention it’s winter now. Ugh. But it will be done in 2011. Oh yes, it will be done.

Community. Where have you discovered community, online or otherwise, in 2010? What community would you like to join, create or more deeply connect with in 2011? {Author: Cali Harris}

This is one of those bittersweet things for me right now. I really feel a sense of community with my colleagues…mostly my immediate team, but also including a few others I’ve gotten to know pretty well. I’ve found community at a few different moments and places, but overall it’s been situation-specific and fleeting. Lately I’ve realized I don’t feel connected here, almost like I could pack up and move somewhere else without much hesitation {no, I don’t plan to any time soon, seriously}.

So in 2011 I plan to get more connected, explore more, meet more people, find my place. I’m not sure exactly how I’m going to do this. I’ve searched for scrapbook stuff and I’m having a tough time finding things. I’ve honestly considered taking a class or something like {gulp} knitting. I cannot knit to save my life, but it seems everyone is knitting AND it would come in handy, wouldn’t it? Any thoughts??

Stay tuned for more...

Reflecting

So awhile ago I came across reverb10 on a couple of blogs I read and thought it was an interesting concept:
Reverb 10 is an annual event and online initiative to reflect on your year and manifest what’s next. Use the end of your year as an opportunity to reflect on what's happened, and to send out reverberations for the year ahead.
However, at the time I was so overwhelmed I couldn't possibly commit to responding to a prompt every. single. day. No way, no how. It just wasn't gonna happen.

I've been getting the emails every day though, and I've thought a lot about a few ... some of them are really tough! So here goes...

One Word. Encapsulate the year 2010 in one word. Explain why you’re choosing that word. Now, imagine it’s one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2011 for you? {Author: Gwen Bell}

I've been thinking about this one for awhile and I'll be honest... I've really struggled! I'm not sure I can pick one word to describe all of 2010. My first thought today is "challenging" but I'm not sure if that's just a reflection of where I'm at right now. Hmm...if 2009 was a year of change, then 2010 has been a year of adjustment. To adjust means to grow into, conform, adapt, to put into working order and I feel like that has been much of what my year has been about. Between establishing working on myself professionally and making my house and yard more my own, I'd have to say adjustments have definitely been made. I suppose I've also worked on myself personally, even though I never really did complete that darn list. My word for 2011 is balance. You know I struggle with balance and self-care and I need to make that a priority in the upcoming year.

Moment. Pick one moment during which you felt most alive this year. Describe it in vivid detail (texture, smells, voices, noises, colors). {Author: Ali Edwards}

I know it's silly...and yes, it's been painful, but CrushGate has definitely left me feeling quite alive this year. The exhilaration, hope, giddiness, embarrassment, etc., have left me with weak knees, a flushed face, goofy smile, and pounding heart... also nausea and dizziness. Heck, it's better than a rollercoaster! {And yes, I just cheated because technically CrushGate has been a series of moments. Deal with it.}

Wonder. How did you cultivate a sense of wonder in your life this year?

I didn't realize this until I was looking back over my blog for the year, but I can answer this without a doubt: I picked up a camera. I'm not a photographer. I don't have a super-fancy-schmancy camera. I've never taken a photography class in my life and really didn't know much of anything when I started playing around. I've read a few things since then, but I'm still pretty astonished when I end up with a good picture (after LOTS of bad shots). I love the macro (or really close-up) shots. There's something awesome about seeing something pretty common, like a flower or a growing pepper, super-close up like that. It just makes me appreciate things in a whole new way.

This cultivated wonder in me

And this

And definitely this

Seeing these pictures again makes me feel a little better about the chilly damp weather out there today...

Anyway, how would you respond to one or all of the prompts above? I'm dying to know...

It's That Time of Year

Is it just me, or does this little space between Christmas and New Year's feel like we're waiting? Holding our breath?

Or maybe, catching our breath? After all the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving and Christmas have died down, it seems to me like people are waiting.

Looking forward.

Planning.

Hoping.

In my family New Year's Eve was never really a big deal and I guess it's still not a big deal for me. Although, as the year draws to a close I do find myself reflecting more. Planning more. Maybe even ... hoping more. And that, my friends, is a good thing.

For me, this time of year also makes me remember. If you've been reading for a while, you know I make a donation each year to the American Cancer Society. You don't need me to tell you (again) that it's a good cause, that they fund important research, provide amazing services and support, and educate the public about so many things.

The American Cancer Society is one of the things I feel strongly about, but maybe it's not your thing. That's OK.

But if you haven't already, then find your thing. Make a difference. Support it- volunteer or participate at an event, raise money, or make a donation. (It's a good time to get those donations made before the years ends, since they're usually tax-deductible.*) There's really no time like the present.

*I am not a Certified Public Accountant, tax expert, or representative of the Internal Revenue Service, so check with someone who knows what they're talking about to verify this.

Refocusing

re-fo-cus transitive verb

1. to focus again
2. to change the direction or emphasis of

I'm making an effort to shift my perspective today, to remember things I'm grateful for.

Like a funny (and unexpected) card from a good friend.

Snow boots & warm socks.

Apple Crisp Lotion by Beyond Belief.

Giant, hand-made snowflakes on my windows...created by a little elf especially for me.

Little elves...who also paint my toenails.

Winter break.

Holiday traditions...like taco dip. :)

Puppies with wagging tails.

Favorite Christmas ornaments (one of many).

Wearing slippers at work (don't worry, they look like shoes).

As always, friends and family both near and far.

What are you grateful for today?

Recharging

It's Sunday afternoon. I am not sure how many hours I've spent laying on the couch this weekend. It took all my energy to shower and get dressed yesterday to go to a movie. Yes, that's right. A movie.

It's official. I'm burned out. I've been sitting here thinking of a dozen things I "should" get done today...some of them are even fun...but I really don't feel like doing anything.

I'm trying to allow myself to be tired and lazy. I decided I would try to work on nourishing my spirit back to health. So, I moved from the couch to my bed. LOL. OK, that doesn't exactly sound like progress. I grabbed some of my favorite books (like The Little Prince and Eat, Pray, Love), some magazine clippings, put some music on, and decided I would try to write a little bit.

Lo and behold, I came across a post I started so long ago... back in the 4th week of the semester actually, which would have been in September. I never finished it. It was a post I really struggled to write, though I'm still not entirely sure why.

After some additions and editing, I decided to post it now because it still fits and it feels more finished to me. In sharing this with you, I'm not looking for sympathy or whatever...I'm not looking for a pep talk. Writing sometimes helps me process what I'm feeling or thinking...but maybe sharing can provide an explanation of sorts, I'm not sure.

{Note: The italics are the parts I wrote previously in September...}

I've been very busy at work. Very. Busy. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around how I went from zero to sixty so fast...

The people filling my schedule are, for the most part, people I've done previous work with and were planning to resume our work once they returned to school. Some have sought me out after having no contact with me for a year or more. Others are new and have been referred specifically to me by a friend or staff member. While in many respects I recognize my sudden "popularity" as a good thing, it also left me feeling tired and overwhelmed at such an early point in the semester (we're only in our 4th week).

I was trying to describe how I was feeling during a conversation with a good friend of mine when she asked, "Heidi, don't you feel flattered?" I had to stop and think about that one. Honestly, feeling flattered was not my initial reaction. I felt overwhelmed, a little bewildered, and worried about doing my best work when I was suddenly swamped.

Then I got an email from a student who graduated a while ago and who was a former client of mine asking for some guidance. I was surprised to hear from this particular person because I was never quite sure how strongly we connected and also because this person did not like asking for help of any kind. The fact that the individual reached out to me was a big deal. At first I couldn't put my finger on how I was feeling...and then it hit me.

A few years ago I copied down this short passage from a work by Irvin D. Yalom, M.D., a psychiatrist and therapist (silly me, I didn't write down the actual source but these are his words). His words have stuck with me ever since...
"We are cradlers of secrets. Every day patients grace us with their secrets, often never before shared. Receiving such secrets is a privilege given to very few. The secrets provide a backstage view of the human condition without social frills, role playing, bravado, or stage posturing.

Those who are cradlers of secrets are granted a clarifying lens through which to view the world- a view with less distortion, denial, and illusion, a view of the way things really are."
Despite feeling tired, overwhelmed, and a little bewildered, I am also incredibly honored to be allowed to be a "cradler of secrets." I am humbled time and again by the trust given to me, that people feel comfortable seeking me out when needed.

And yet, what a huge responsibility. My coworkers and I have been talking a lot about this lately. We've all been very busy, we've all been tired, but we've all worked in some tough settings, so this shouldn't be such a big deal, right?

Well, no. In our discussions, we realized a few things. First, I think of college/university campuses as sort of self-contained bubbles...microcosms of "the real world." Most resources or services can be found right on campus and quite honestly, lots of students don't ever think about venturing off campus for things. Given that I work on a small, residential campus... this is the case even more often, I think. I realized the other day that part of what is always looming in the distance for me, is the fact that every one of those students is a potential client/patient. Even if they have a therapist back home or off campus... if something happens on campus, we get called in. For some students, we are really the only "adult" they trust to talk with about things or to go to with problems. Recently, after finishing up with one of my clients, I unexpectedly found another one asleep on the waiting room couch, waiting to see me, needing a safe place to go and someone to help.

I sometimes feel overwhelmed and even a little scared in those moments, especially when I'm tired and ready for a break. Sometimes I think, "Why me? How the heck do I know what to do?"

Don't get me wrong, I love my job. Reflecting on this today...OK honestly it doesn't magically take away my exhaustion, but it does help me remember why I do what I do. It helps me put things in perspective. And it makes me realize that I do deserve to be lazy this weekend. {My friend William has been telling me that for two days. Thank you, William.} No wonder I'm tired and unmotivated when I was feeling that way at the beginning of a very long semester!

Hmm. Maybe I just need to get better at validating myself and giving myself permission to say "no" more often (and not feeling bad about it).

Maybe I need to actually USE more of that vacation time I have piling up...

Made It...Barely

The way the day started...at 12:22 am with random text messages from a friend who shall remain nameless...I figured it was going to be quite a day. I managed to get to work a little early for my 8:00 appointment (I hate 8:00s) and things seemed like they were going to be OK.

No. Another urgent situation came up that left me feeling ready to curl up into the fetal position and not move for the rest of the day. But I got through the day...we all did.

And now I'm going to eat some boneless wings and have a beer with my peeps! Hello Winter Break, I am really, really glad to see you.

PS- I did eventually get back to sleep after making sure the nameless friend was not manic, bleeding to death, suicidal, or drunk.

So. Tired.

Just one more day to get through until students are officially on break. I can barely hold on. It's been tough these last couple weeks. I mean really tough. So keep your fingers crossed for us...that tomorrow is nothing like the last few days.

You can do it, Heidi...just hang on.

It's Not the Best Pic, But...

isn't my very first life-sized (as opposed to teeny, table-top-sized) tree kinda purty anyway??

I got the tree, skirt, tree topper (which you can't see), and most of the ornaments on sale after Christmas last year! I saved a buttload of money. I can't decide if I'm going to brave the crowds and find a few more decorations after Christmas this year...

Do you have your tree and/or holiday stuff up yet?

Just Call Me Sneezy

I'm feeling a bit sneezy this morning... and I really, really hope I'm not getting sick because I have work SO hard for the last few weeks to stay healthy. It's not been easy! Students come in sick all the time, I've been around sick family and friends, in public places covered in germs...and I've stayed healthy. But this morning, I've sneezed a few times and I just have that impending-sneeze sort of feeling. Ugh. AND I think I might be out of vitamin C! Great timing.

Anyway, I had a pretty good weekend. K-Dog and I went out for a couple of drinks Friday night after work...after a LONG, busy, crises-filled day. (Of course, on the last day of class all hell breaks loose...but I suppose the first day of class was like that too.) We ended up running into a former coworker and her husband and they ended up joining us after they went out for dinner. I also convinced our other coworker L to come out (she rarely can join us) and we all had a great time! It was a much-needed stress reliever. Plus, I spent quite a bit of time talking to a boy next to me at the bar...he was funny and fit right in with our silly group. :)

Saturday I just hunkered down and waited for the blizzard to hit. I relaxed on the couch, watched movies, cooked, worked on Christmas cards, and waited. And finally the storm hit. It's been super-cold and very windy, which I hate. Yesterday I bundled up and spent an hour or so shoveling snow with my neighbors. Thank goodness for helpful people with giant snowblowers, that's all I can say! I'm very sore and tired today, but at least the snow is cleared out.

Well, today is my late day at work, so I should finish getting ready and head out to warm up and clean off my car. I need to try to get to work a little bit early...it's going to be a very busy day. I can't wait until 6:00 when I'm finished!

Musings...

I have internet at home again!!! Woohoo! Gosh, I really didn't think I depended on the internet so much until it was gone for a while. It's been a crazier week than I imagined and I'm so looking forward to the weekend... and winter break!

I was planning a CrushGate update for you... a few updates actually. But I've been having a really hard time writing these updates lately. I tried a few times and I keep stopping and starting. And I wonder why it's so tough lately, particularly because I like telling the stories and you all seem to like reading them. Of course it's exciting for me, I mean, I have a serious-15-year-old-girl-type-CRUSH on someone. We all know I have had issues with serotonin and dopamine lately...I mean, last week I was dreaming about puppies and babies. What the h@$*??

But I think part of my struggle is trying to figure out how much I want out there. I mean, at first the stories were really funny and mostly just embarrassing for me. Now, they're still embarrassing for me (uh, especially all that social ineptitude), but what if someday, something does actually happen...what would he think about all this? And cripes, do I really want him to know all these embarrassing-clumsy-panicky-smitten thoughts I've had about him from Day One?

Chances are, I'd probably tell him this stuff anyway...

But for now, I think I need to put a little more thought into my approach going forward. I'm still open to writing about it...I just need some time.

What do you think? Suggestions? Comments, feedback, any advice?

More importantly, can you forgive me for putting off a CrushGate update again?

Whoops...

Happy Monday! (I guess)... it's the last week of classes for the semester and I'm so happy the end is in sight. What a semester it's been! {Sigh.} I'm ready for some time off.

Anyway, I promised I'd be back this week and here I am! Though with my internet out at home, blogging is going to be interesting. I actually wrote some stuff over the weekend and planned to steal a few moments during lunch to blog, but I completely forgot my jumpdrive at work last Friday...so I couldn't transfer things to my computer there today.

Don't worry though, I ordered a new wireless device today! For FREE! Woohoo! It should be here in 2 to 5 days. :)

Meanwhile, I remembered the jumpdrive today so I will have a CrushGate update for you tomorrow. And no, this isn't just a suspense-building tactic!

VBB

That's me...VBB...a Very Bad Blogger.

I haven't posted in forever (duh).

I've barely kept up with my favorite blogs (I'm sorry!) though if I have, I have been horrible at leaving comments (again, I'm sorry!).

But it's not because I don't love all of you... I do. And I miss blogging! I really do! There have been times I really felt like I needed to write about something, to vent or process or just share a funny story. Yet there were days I tried and didn't have the right words. But I do miss it. And all of you. :)

So I promise to be back soon with some good stuff...including some Christmasy pictures and some good stories- including a CrushGate update! (No, he hasn't professed his love for me.) I will also try to get caught up on blogs... although to complicate matters further my internet is defunct at the moment, so I'm using my fancy phone to write this! Sweet!

Have an awesome weekend everyone! I will be back next week!

Have I Mentioned...?

 I love Fall.

I love cooler nights when you can keep the windows open and sleep snuggled under a blanket.
I love pulling out light sweaters and my brown trench coat.
Wearing darker, richer colors, though apparently I tend to do that in every season anyway.
Warm drinks.
I love walking through the fallen, crunchy leaves... It is one of the big things I really missed about Wisconsin when I was living in Colorado. Fall. Leaves. I was recently walking with a four-year-old and I told him I loved crunching through the leaves, kicking them around a little as I walked. I guess he'd never considered this and asked me "Why??" I told him I loved the sound and they way the looked and that it was actually pretty fun. He seemed satisfied with my answer and immediately went on telling me he really did have a SpongeBob Square Pants taco for breakfast. Hmm.

Mostly, I love looking up and seeing this.

Just a Sunday Afternoon on the Porch

This little guy ... or gal... was hanging out on my porch! Lucky for me I managed to snag a couple shots with my cell phone! And my camera! He was hanging out for almost 10 minutes, I think.

Enjoying the view? Comfortable? Sick? Rabid???

Wait, napping?! (click to enlarge) Wow.

I guess for this little guy, the porch was a good spot to take a Sunday nap.

Or he really is diseased and disoriented. Great.

I'm Not Really Back Yet...

But... I just thought I'd post a few lines. I've been studying like crazy. I'm sick of having my licensing exam hanging over my head and just want it done. So I've been spending most of my free time studying and answering practice questions. Seriously, it's like an obsession. I just want it over.

Which is why I'm on blogging hiatus. I just can't juggle everything right now.

In other news, I talked to The Crush today. I had to consult with him, so it was absolutely work-related. And yet, I still nearly puked at the thought of calling him. I was practically hyperventilating. Yes, it's bad. It's like I'm 15 again. Except... worse. I don't actually react this way to all people... or even all men. It seems to be just him. I'd say I was getting close to putting him in the back of my mind since I haven't seen or spoken to him for a month, but ... I keep coming into contact with his students, or randomly hearing stories about him from someone I barely know. Seriously- I was at a going-away reception for a colleague last week and this guy starts telling a group of us a story about a weird phone call he got and the story ends up being about TC. It was kinda funny (again, good to know TC has a sense of humor). But weird.

Anyway, back to today. I did manage to leave TC a mostly-succinct voicemail (instead of the rambling ones that end up getting cut off because I take too long) and eventually he called back. It was a decent conversation and I even managed to use my social skills. We agreed to touch base again soon.

With my luck, he'll just stop by my office to chat when I least expect him. And I'll be bent over or doing something equally ridiculous.

Lord help me.

Have a good weekend! I hope to be back with a post or two next week. No promises though. :)

Mmmmmmuffins!

Last weekend, after I put my oatmeal cranberry cookies in the oven, I decided that since I already had everything out and was in a baking sort of mood, I would make some muffins. I love me some muffins. And it has been far too long since I’ve made any!

Enter the perfect cookbook for the occasion: Mad About Muffins: A Cookbook for Muffin Lovers, by Dot Vartan. I have had this cookbook forever it seems. I have numerous recipes marked, but honestly, I’m not sure I ever actually baked any of them! The cookbook has so much to offer and is broken into delectable categories, like these (to name a few):
“Everyone’s Favorites” (Basic, Blueberry, Dill, etc.)
“Garden Variety” (e.g., Butternut Squash, Vegetable Cheese, Sweet Potato)
“For Chocolate Lovers” which leave me wanting a big glass of milk just reading the recipes (e.g., Chocolate Caramel (oh boy!), Banana Chocolate, Peanut Butter Chocolate)
“Variations on a Cake” (e.g., Apple Cheesecake, Lemon Shortbread, Four Chip)
Yum. Don’t they sound good? There is even a recipe for a Wine and Cheese muffin! Whoa. Anyway, besides being full of yummy recipes, it’s also full of cute illustrations.

I decided to make Mixed Berry muffins, using the Blueberry Muffin recipe from the book. I had a variety of frozen berries on hand- blackberry, blueberry, and raspberry- so I used those. I should also point out that I don’t use a regular muffin tin, I have these muffin bakers that look like little flower pots. I love them. I am kicking myself for not snatching up a like-new set I saw at Goodwill a while ago. The pots make larger muffins, so I always end up with fewer than the recipe indicates and I typically have to adjust the baking time.

Blueberry (or Mixed Berry, if you prefer) Muffins

6 Tbsp softened butter
2/3 C. granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 Tsp. vanilla extract
2 Tsp. baking powder
1/4 Tsp. salt
2 C. sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 C. milk
2 C. fresh or frozen blueberries (or other berries to suit your fancy)

Streusel Topping:
2 Tbsp. butter
2 Tbsp. brown sugar
1/4 Tsp. cinnamon
1/2 C. chopped walnuts (ew, totally optional)

Heat oven to 375. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in the eggs. Add the vanilla extract, baking powder, and salt. Mix in half of the flour and the milk alternately, mixing gently by hand. Then add the remaining flour and milk. Stir in the blueberries. Fill greased muffin tins or foiled paper.

To make the streusel topping, cut the butter into small pieces and mix it with the brown sugar and cinnamon (and walnuts, if that’s your thing). Sprinkle the topping over the batter. Bake 25-30 minutes until muffins are lightly browned. Makes one dozen muffins…unless you’re using bigger muffin bakers, like me...then it makes 9-10 muffins.

One thing that struck me about these muffins was the thickness of the batter. I seriously thought I shorted the milk, but I know I didn’t. I made the streusel topping, but mine just didn’t work like it should have- mine ended up being like cinnamon butter, so I just put a small glob on each of the muffins. I think next time I will leave out the streusel topping completely or maybe use a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. I actually like to sprinkle a little sugar on top of the muffin when I heat it up to eat. Mm.

The muffins were so good! They were very moist and cake-y.

Mm, hello lover.

I actually ate mine with a fork, rather than risk them falling apart in my hand. The muffins didn’t dry out over the course of the week, either! I froze a few of the muffins for later, and they were just as good as when they were fresh out of the oven.

As usual, I would love to know if you try the recipe and if you like it …and if your batter turns out super-thick like mine.

Do you have any fun specialty cookbooks? Any favorite muffin recipes you care to share??

I am Grateful...

...for fuzzy bees that sit on flowers long enough to get a few perfect pictures.

...that I took a LOT of pictures over the summer so I can enjoy them in the dead of Wisconsin winter.
...that it is Wednesday and halfway through the week.
...this institution celebrates Sacred Hour each Wednesday. We're given this hour each week to use for reflection, prayer, connection, etc. There is Common Prayer offered each week, but usually I just use the time to close my door, and read or rest, or sometimes even to practice biofeedback!
...for Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies and made from scratch mixed berry muffins.
...for ChapStick.
What are you grateful for today?

Memories & Glue

I finally finished a project I have been thinking about for a while. See, a few years ago I bought a shadowbox that I never ended up using for the project I had in mind at the time. Not one to just get rid of things that can be useful, I saved it. The darn thing moved with me from Fort Collins to Milliken, and finally, to Wisconsin, where it still sat around for a while. I wanted to use it for just the right thing.

It finally hit me when I changed my license plates. I knew I wanted to use my Colorado plates for something and finally could!

I gathered some things from my time in Colorado, though that was easier said than done. I wanted to put things that reminded me of good times, favorite places, and people, but I didn't want to fill it with pictures (that's what my scrapbook and other framed photos are for), nor did I want to stick anything too valuable or irreplaceable in there. And then, like most of my projects, this one sat around for a long time until I finally did it!

No, your eyes aren't fooling you, I blurred out part of the number.

It took me a few tries to get everything arranged how I liked. And then I had to get a bit creative with putting everything in there. Obviously a shadowbox has depth, so I wanted to use that and shoot for a layered look.

I started with my old, trusty map of Fort Collins. Boy, I used that thing a lot when I first moved there! It was definitely worn in places. I took the map and glued it to the back of the shadowbox. I tried very hard to make sure the part glued to the back included campus and the area of town where I lived for 5 whole years. While you can't actually see where I lived (it's covered by the license plate), you can see where campus is...right by my CSU Alumni pin!

You can also see a couple of tickets in the photo- one is for the Denver Art Museum (DAM) and one is for the Budweiser Brewery. What a contrast, huh? The Brewery was a fun place to visit, particularly because it was the first one I ever toured and it's home to one of the Clydesdale teams. I went there a number of times over the years- with my family, friends, and grad school peers- and it was fun every time. I didn't visit the DAM until the last couple years I lived in Colorado. I wish I had gone sooner! And became a member! It's a place that has some great memories attached...and great art! Plus it's very interactive, which is fun for everyone, let's be honest.

Oh, The Rio! I may miss you most of all! OK, probably not, but I have not had a margarita as good or as potent anywhere else! Seriously, there is a 3 margarita limit- I debated displaying the back of the matchbox because it says that! The salsa was delish there too. The food was good, but people typically didn't go there for the food. I couldn't even tell you how many times I went there to celebrate something...or to start out a fun evening with a marg!

Another place I went to often, in the later years, was Jay's. My advisor loved that place and would sometimes take his students out for a nice evening...on his dime. I had some really great times with him there. To me, Jay's meant laughter, live jazz, amazing creme brulee, wine, and oysters. Not all at the same time, though. :) I also remember cold nights...for some reason I really only remember being there when it was cold out, which makes me think of the twinkly Christmas lights on all the trees and walking down the street arm-in-arm with my advisor and a good friend.

I tucked a map of Colorado in there, as well as my brochure/guide to the DAM. I also included a New Belgium bottle cap. I think it was from a Fat Tire or maybe a Skinny Dip. Gosh, I just realized...it may seem like I just drank a lot the whole time I was in Colorado! Budweiser, The Rio, Jay's, New Belgium. I promise, I didn't! In fact, I've probably had more New Belgium brews since I left Colorado than I did when I was living there.

My little shadowbox might not seem like much, but it was fun putting it together and fun reminiscing. When I think of the good times I had at these places, it brings up all kinds of other related memories too! Good times.

Cravings

Last night, I was suddenly craving something a bit sweet and decided to make cookies. I took a quick mental inventory of my cupboards and realized I probably had all the ingredients for oatmeal cookies. I Googled a recipe and was dismayed to find the first few called for quick-cooking oats, when all I had was old-fashioned oats. Boo.

And then, Smitten Kitchen came to my rescue! Have I mentioned how much I love this blog? I love her photos! Her baby is adorable! And she's pretty funny, too.

Anyway, I basically followed her recipe except I added a dash of nutmeg (it's almost a compulsion...whenever cinnamon is involved, I believe deep down in my soul that nutmeg should also be included) and I used dried cranberries instead of raisins. Nothing against raisins...I just love cranberries. Mm.

I made a couple of trays of cookies, and formed the rest of the dough into dough balls onto a parchment-lined plate and threw that into the freezer. Later, when the balls (hehe, balls) were firm (oh dear), I tossed them into a freezer bag for later. Yay me for planning ahead.

Make these cookies. The recipe is easy, quick, and not overly sweet. I'm tempted to eat them for breakfasts...They're basically like a granola bar anyway!

Unsettled

Occasionally I dream about someone from my past. These dreams seemingly rise up out of nowhere ... like fog...and they bother me. Not because they're bad dreams or anything. In fact, they're usually fairly nice dreams. They usually involve him and me... and strong feelings for each other... though sometimes the feelings are expressed a bit too late and other times we're right smack dab in the middle of this deep love for each other.

Like last night. My dream last night involved a marriage proposal. The ring I got had a "diamond" that looked like a hunk of hand blown glass....you could see those tiny little bubbles inside. I didn't seem to care that much. But to his credit, he told me it was temporary and took me to a fancy store to find the one I wanted pretty much right away. The dream was nice. We were happy.

But I opened my eyes this morning and the whole thing bothered me. These dreams about him just bother  me. Why him? Why now? Why does he pop up out of nowhere without a reason? It's not like I heard something about him recently or saw a picture or anything. I've virtually heard nothing from him since maybe once or twice very early in college. Before that we had basically parted ways sometime in the middle of high school and really had little to do with each other.

Usually I can shrug these feelings off, but today seems different. I feel foggy. I feel distracted and irritated. And it's almost like I have this nagging worry about him. For the very first time in years I have actually thought about trying to find out about him. I even tried to see if he was on Facebook.

But why? I don't really want to have an ongoing friendship with him...not really. And I think I heard a long time ago that he was married. So why now?

What does it all mean?
Why do I continue to have dreams about this guy?
What should I do?

Aw, Shucks!

I got an award! Thanks Suz, you're awesome!! I'm flattered!

I've mentioned Suz's blog here before, and if you haven't checked her out, seriously, do so! Be sure to read all about her recent mission trip to Dubai, check out her book reviews, and read all about her other adventures in being a {gulp} new 30-year-old!

So now, I'm supposed to accept this award: Thank you, I accept. :-) Check.
Link back to the person who awarded it: Suz. Check.
Tell you 7 things about myself (see below) and tag 15 other lovely bloggers (hmm..).

Without further ado, seven things about me:

1. I have a freakishly good memory. Seriously, it sometimes irritates people. Or impresses them when it's handy. K-Dog loves when I can tell him where I last saw something on the disaster area that is his desk. True story, I'll say something like, "That book is on the left side of your desk, under the stack of papers, about 2/3 the way down." And I'll be sitting in my office.

2. It takes me forever to make certain decisions. For instance, I still haven't decided on paint colors for my kitchen and dining rooms, bedroom, or bathroom. Not that I'm in a rush, but seriously. I think this indecision is actually a family trait.

3. I might get to teach Human Sexuality next summer! I am excited and terrified about this. I was the TA for the class while in graduate school and I did some guest lecturing. But teaching it all by myself? Yikes.

4. When someone suggests that I "just ask The Crush out" I simultaneously want to laugh, cry, and throw up.

5. I just joined Facebook at the end of last April. Yup. As in, about five months ago. I hate Facebook drama, and working with college students, I see a lot of it. Since I've joined, there are times I think it's fun and times I think about closing my account. I still hate Facebook drama. And I'd rather blog.

6. I've recently been watching all the seasons of 24 on Netflix Instant online. I get sucked in each time, even though the show is entirely too predictable. Seriously. Yet, I'm addicted. It may be that I have a crush on Jack Bauer and think he gets cuter every season. Except when he cries. I hate when he cries...he looks fake and kinda scary. I should know, I see people cry every day at work.

7. Looking back, I think the research I am most proud of is my Master's thesis. I was thinking about it again the other day and I really feel as though it is my baby. All mine. And I'm proud of it. Yet, it's not published and likely never will be. That's a story for another time... But I kind of miss doing research like that. If only there were more hours in the day.

OK, now... onto the bloggers... Hmm. I don't think I even read 15 blogs that I could tag, but here's what I've got:

EKN at Tales of Our Journey
Kim at Kim's Spot
N at N's Wonderful World
Amber at A little bit of everything

Um... I think that's all I've got. I mean, I read a bunch of other blogs, but they're not really those kinds of blogs. So here's to the four I chose!!! Woohoo! Cheers ya'll! Enjoy!

Technicolor Pepper

Thanks to my brother, I got to enjoy this delicious, multicolor pepper!

She was purty AND tasted good!

I Know You're Dying to Know...

He didn't show up.

I was in the foyer greeting people, answering questions, and pointing people in the right direction, so I'm fairly sure I saw the majority of the 250-300 people at the event. I mean, sure, there's a chance he managed to get into the big ballroom/conference room area through one of the side doors, but that's unlikely.

I swear I saw him walking toward the building (I was right by a window) at one point and my heart started racing.... but obviously not.

Anyway, the event itself was a big success (not that I had much to do with that part- I wasn't able to attend the planning meetings). We had an awesome turnout, the speaker was actually pretty good, and it was nice to be involved in a collaborative community project!

Cute?!

I think YOU guys are cute! Thanks for your comments... though I must say, I'm kind of having a tough time with the decreased ability to focus, the knots in my stomach, and the difficulty carrying on conversations at times. Sigh. And that's not even when The Crush is around. When he's around, I feel the way Buddy the Elf described it in this scene in the movie Elf. For those of you not able to click the link, it's the scene when Buddy finally asks Jovie out...this quote fits me the best:
Buddy: But... I really wanted to see you, and... and I think you're beautiful, and I, um...I feel really warm when I am around you, and, um, my tongue swells up.
Uh, yeah. I think that sums it up in a nutshell.

Although today, I really am proud of myself for carrying on a conversation. For longer than like two minutes! And actually, if TC is kind of shy, he did a great job carrying on a conversation also! Yay for both of us!

So remember when K-Dog and I had to do the presentation for TC's students? Well I was a bit surprised when we never got a thank you email or anything since from what I hear, TC seems to be a really considerate guy. Today, TC came by with a t-shirt for each of us as a thank you. The t-shirts were leftover from an event and are pretty cool...except they are neon green!! Yikes! Mine is made of the sweat-wicking material but apparently he didn't have one in a big enough size for K-Dog, so he just got a regular cotton tee. Heehee.

Anyway, I was typing away at my computer when TC came in... again, I didn't hear the door and just barely heard a tiny noise when I peered out my door and there he was. Since K-Dog was on the phone, TC came right into my office. I told him he was really a "silent walker" and should wear a bell because I can never hear him come in (later I realized he had a student behind him , who let the door close quietly). All I could think about was the last time he showed up! Maybe he was thinking that too, I don't know. I know my face felt a little warm and I'm sure I was a little bit flushed. I know I was smiling and I think there was good eye contact during the whole interaction.

After I asked him how his event went (yay for me for remembering social skills!) and we chatted a bit about that, he said that he was still planning to send that flier out to some people and that he'd already mentioned it to a few people. And then he said, "it's tomorrow night already." We chatted a bit more and he said it was nice that it was free and he thought he "might go just for the appetizers!" as it's at a local steakhouse and the apps are free! I told him he should go! We talked more about that and I told him he didn't even have to register because they managed to count me twice. We swapped stories about what we knew about the speaker... again, this is a speaker he has some interest in so bonus points for me for actually have some background info on her!!

Then he said, "Well, could you give this (shirt) to K-Dog for me? I can't stand here all day while he's yappin' on the phone." We both chuckled because we know K-Dog can be chatty. I said I would give it to him and pass along his thanks and appreciation.

And then he left. And I hyperventilated. And posted on my blog.

The end.

PS- 1. I've already had about 6 conversations about what I'm wearing tomorrow on the off-chance that he shows up at this event.
2. I have a suspicion that if his students actually DO go to this event, he'll end up with them...in his professional role, which will leave limited time for he and I to interact.
3. I could vomit.

Can't. Breathe.

My Crush was just here.

In my office.

He gave me a shirt. As a thank you for the talk we did. (K-Dog got one too).

We chatted.

I might pass out.

That's all for now....I need to breathe into a paper bag.

Paperclips & Neurotransmitters

Do you ever fidget with paperclips? Bend them? Twist them around? I do. I often do it during meetings or when I'm sitting around with colleagues and talking about work stuff.

I sometimes do it during presentations, obviously under the table or behind a podium where no one sees. I even did it during my thesis defense.

It's stress relief, I guess.

Apparently, I also end up making little paperclip hearts sometimes.

Ugh. I tried to tell you. All that dopamine and serotonin. It's real. And powerful.

Bleh. Somebody make it stop.

*Afterthought: Yesterday, I also found myself nearly squealing with glee at the oh-so-adorable little boy dressed in his very-first-day-of-school-best, standing on his porch proudly while his mom and dad took pictures to commemorate the event. Two blocks later, I was ready to drive to the animal shelter and adopt a puppy because I saw the cutest, tail-wagging, leash-chewing puppy out for a walk with its owner. Again, gleeful "oohs" and "ahhs" ensued. I reminded myself I have two dogs. And no time for a puppy. Sigh.

Breaking News...

NOTE: I originally wrote most of this last night, so I could post it quickly today after adding a few updates. Well... my day was CRAZY. I barely could keep up with emails and returning calls. What the heck!? It's the. first. day. Ugh. Anyway, this was supposed to be an optimistic post ... I wanted to post it sometime this morning, when much of this was actually "breaking news" ... oh well. Here goes.

My intern is back in town!! I'm so excited to have her back...in spite of my anxiety about the start of a new academic year. She's back and we are going to get some great things accomplished this year.

I picked and ate my first homegrown tomato!! My beautiful Yellow Giant Belgium.

It was very tasty, more mild and less acidic than a red tomato. Only...it certainly wasn't "giant"...hmm. There are a couple of others ripening on the plant and I can't wait!

I worked on a crafty little project over the weekend, which I'll show you later...hopefully this week. I will give you a hint... it involved a glue gun and some memories.

Our new team member starts this week! I'm so excited to have her on board. She seems like she'll be a great fit, will help with our ever-increasing workload, and might even be...{dare I say it?}...friend potential!

Yes, these are things I am excited about and grateful for today. The first day of the new academic year. A year that brings "record enrollment."

How are you feeling today??

PS- I emailed the flier to The Crush. It took all day to write the email, mostly because I was so busy that I only had time to work on it in tiny bits and pieces. I was trying not to vomit as I composed the email. Sigh. I doubt I'll hear anything back. {Sigh.}

The Rest of the Story

Remember writing notes like this back in the day?

I distinctly remember writing notes that said, "I like you, do you like me? Circle YES or NO."

{Sigh} If only it were still that simple.

We had TC's presentation on Tuesday. Of course I thought carefully about what I would be wearing, since each of the other times TC and I have interacted I was wearing my work shirts with our program's name and the school mascot embroidered on. Don't get me wrong, they're great shirts, but I just wanted to wear something... cuter. :)

I would love to be able to say that the presentation was amazing and that The Crush and I locked eyes and felt electricity... that we heard harps playing and we rode off into the sunset together to live happily ever after.

I'm sorry, but this is not that kind of blog. My life just isn't that kind of life.

At least my "love plant" is still growing. {Remember the Love Fern from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days? :) I don't plan to get all crazy like she did, don't worry.}

It was a very busy day, so I couldn't get too worried beforehand. We arrived early, as usual. K-Dog really likes to play music or funny YouTube clips before he presents. It's a good thing...BUT... it meant that when TC arrived, we all were just standing at the front of the room watching YouTube. Which meant no real chance for TC and I to talk.

Overall, the presentation went well. I managed to say a few funny things. And a few intelligent things. I tried to remember to smile and throw in humor when I could. I made sure to clearly state that we'd be finishing with plenty of time for everyone to keep to the schedule, at which point TC and I exchanged a smile.

There were a few lovely moments of very direct eye contact. One in particular made my heart skip a beat and my knees go weak; I was pretty stoked about it for a while. A couple smiles. But that's about it.

K-Dog told me before that he thinks TC is really shy and seems to be quite private. I agree. He definitely talks to K-Dog more...and they have interacted more often over a longer period of time. But I'm also starting to think TC has a "man crush" on K-Dog. It seems K-Dog agrees but said, "Heidi, he needs to know that he has to go through you to get to me."

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be flattered by that or not. {Sigh}

And that, my friends, was the rest of the story.

The end.

PS- I'm thinking about forwarding TC a flier for an evening program in the near future. The speaker is someone that he and/or his students might be interested in, though she is talking about a slightly different topic. I've got nothing to lose, right? I should send it...right?

Public Service Announcement #2

If you work in an academic setting, remember the month of August

is crazy-busy-stressful...

You should write everything down,

make sure it gets written on the appropriate calendars,

and review said calendars regularly

Or you may forget you have 2 1 more presentations in the next few hours.

Public Service Announcement

Doing laundry in the middle of a crazy-busy-stressful week may result in in you wearing on Friday
the same piece of clothing
(a brightly-colored cardigan or light sweater, for example)
you wore on Monday...

but couldn't remember wearing...

because of your
crazy-busy-sleep-deprived-stress-induced
memory deficits.

Smitten Kitten

I know I promised you an update, but I just need to say, these last two weeks have been nuts! Trainings, presentations, trainings, more presentations, welcoming new students,a quick trip to Urgent Care (for my stupid fluid-filled ear), plus all the regular stuff. And I'm on call for an extra week and just praying students stay safe for the first weekend back. Sigh.

OK, now on to our feature presentation... New developments in CrushGate. Sooner than I expected, that's for sure.

And by the way, in case you didn't now....I'm completely smitten. I've got a crush. I've got extra serotonin and dopamine floating around in my body and that makes me get excited about nothing and think silly things and see hearts in random places...

These chemicals are powerful. It's not my fault.

Seriously, in the grand scheme of things, these aren't major events. I get it. And yet in my sick, totally smitten mind ...it's a tiny bit of ...something.

K-Dog did have something to do with this, but I'm not sure he was actually trying this time. Last Friday he had planned to be out of the office until about noon. I got to work and noticed an email from him at 7:30 that morning. He's not a morning person so that was weird to see.

Anyway, I saw the first few lines of the email and realized the greeting was to The Crush (TC, for short) and I was copied on the email. Basically, K-Dog apologized to TC for the delay in getting back to him about a presentation that one or both of us would be doing for TC's group of students. Then he said, "Heidi, could you please check our schedules and get back to TC," blah blah.

You might think that was a simple task, but there were so many things going through my head! First, K-Dog was trying to schedule something for a time we were already double-booked. I had pointed this conflict out approximately three times earlier last week. Sigh. Second, I know we're working to foster some connections with other departments and didn't want to say the wrong thing - i.e., "we're too darn busy to help you." Third, I was thinking, "This is it, Heidi. Your big chance. Don't screw this up. Be helpful. Be funny."

I checked and double-checked schedules, then tried to compose my email. I figured honesty was the best policy and I should just tell him we already double-booked and would do everything we could to be flexible and find another time and offered some options. I said something about while we were "good" we weren't "that good" to be in three places at once. {Insert smiley.} It was my lame attempt at mild humor in an email. Gimme a break, I don't know the guy that well!

We ended up having a funny email exchange. AND found a time that worked for the presentation. Win-win! The best part was that TC said the same thing I had been debating writing! I was so excited about it, I actually wrote him back and said that I was going to write the same thing, blah blah (it was basically a little joke about K-Dog needing to have scheduled "snack time" during his day). This was also a good sign because it said to me that TC has a sense of humor. Which is hugely important. Oh, he also said that they were on a tight schedule, so I told him it would be my "personal mission" to make sure K-Dog and I finished the presentation on time.

Yes, I do know I'm dorky, thanks for noticing. :)

So I know these are small things, but if I only have a few chances to interact with this guy, I'd better make the most of them, right?

The presentation happened on Tuesday. And that's where I need to leave you hanging until tomorrow. It's well past my bedtime and I'm wiped out.
